Smart City Lab

Smart City Lab is the first ever logo (which I know of) to actually incorporate a custom designed QR code as the symbol itself. Not only does the symbol act as a link to the enterprise website, but the design also captures the concept being promoted: innovative testing grounds for developing digitally linked urban areas via internet and mobile technologies.

To design the symbol, I researched how smartphone Quick Response Code scanners read the bitmapped code and I identified critical areas and the range of colours which work. The algorithm allows for a surprising amount of missing data, but it comes down to a method of see how far it can be pushed without breaking. The logo typeface ChollaSans reflects the optimizing optical scanning aspect - the font was originally designed for telephone directories where text was printed in small sizes on low quality paper: while character details would fill when printed it was still legible.

I could not resist highlighting the IT in the middle of “CITY” and so I also added a bitmap to the dot on the letter I.

Business cards were printed double sided: on the reverse was also a QR code allowing a smartphone to read all the persons contact details.
